I am dismayed and appalled by the latest move by the Trump administration to change food stamp rules in a way that is projected to kick 3.1 million people off of food stamps. A move apparently triggered by the ability of one rich guy to manage to get around the rules.
It reminds me of the discredited “welfare queen” stories of the past. If they have some actual data, let’s see it. But food stamps are often the last line of defense against abject poverty and the changes are being protested by front-line organizations that actually serve these people on a daily basis. To support the move because it “saves money” at a time when income disparity only continues to increase and the rich are still benefiting from the big tax break they got is galling.
We have children who go hungry during the summer because they don’t get school lunches. We have families that run out of food before the end of the month because food stamp benefits aren’t enough. We don’t need to cut benefits. We need to enhance them.
