Letter: Trump borrows old tactics

By Ron Sturgeon, Vancouver
Published: August 5, 2019, 6:00am

In pursuing and assuming the presidency, Donald Trump has:

• Lied habitually.

• Bullied friend and foe, especially women and minorities.

• Perfected the art of connecting with the crowds.

• Promoted a cult of the individual: himself.

• Undermined the media.

• Created enemies while pretending to protect us.

• Threatened force, violence, and incarceration against the opposition.

• Attacked judges and traditional agencies and institutions.

• Exacerbated situations to create crises for distraction and unification of supporters.

• Taken credit for others’ accomplishments, including the Obama economic recovery.

• Enacted major tax cuts to curry favor with the wealthiest Americans.

• Preached reaction.

Donald Trump did not originate the core concepts of the above list. He borrowed them from Italian fascist Benito Mussolini. Trump has mastered Mussolini’s fascist game plan. The similarity of tactics for Trump, Putin, Kim, and others of their ilk may explain Trump’s affinity for them. In their lust for power, Mitch McConnell and a substantial majority of the GOP choose to ignore or accept Trump’s extremism.

What have we wrought in this Trump presidency?

Our constitution has slowed Trump, but failed American democracy.
