Letter: Keep bias in perspective

This is in regards to the article “Fox’s Tucker Carlson calls white supremacy ‘a hoax’, sparking outrage” (The Associated Press, Aug. 8). While I think there is a number of white supremacy groups, I don’t think they are responsible for most of the shootings. From “Chronicle of Carnage in the United States” (The Columbian, Aug. 8), out of the 250 mass shootings in 2019, none are credited to white supremacy. And most of them seemed personal, like home invasion, barroom brawl, or drive-by shootings, which could be gang related.

We do need to keep racial bias in perspective. While it should not be, there is transgender bias, cultural bias, male bias, female bias, LGBT bias, Catholic bias, Mormon bias, etc. Anyone who is ignorant has a bias. Most biased information is based on faulty information that is acquired due to a poor life experience. We need to focus on our same humanity, and on the goodness of all people who contribute to its goodness. And we should not give free publicity to the perpetrators of violence.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
