Letter: NRA goals are misguided

The frequent mass shootings in America are unique compared to other first world countries. It has been shown not to be associated with violent forms of entertainment, but linked to the availability of firearms, especially high-capacity, rapid-fire weapons. Ever since Wayne LaPierre became CEO of the NRA, the goal of the NRA changed from providing shooter safety training to protecting weapons manufacturers and the sellers’ market. Their market has shifted from target shooters and hunters to the chronically fearful Americans. In this way LaPierre has enriched his coffers.

President Trump’s interests are to support the profits of his wealthy backers, which include the NRA and the weapons manufacturers and sellers. Trump’s statements regarding background checks and protections of the NRA’s goals will not provide what is needed to reduce our epidemic of angry people trying to “solve” their problems with violence.
