Letter: Lack of new bridge is disgusting

By Lynn Brown, Vancouver

Well here we go again, another attempt to build a new Interstate 5 Bridge. This new attempt to finally do something is in the hands of politicians so I’m not holding my breath. In 2013 they sabotaged the CRC, costing commuters what will be more than a decade of bridge lifts, traffic backups for miles and huge costs to businesses.

This was mainly because of opposition to light rail coming to Vancouver. An extensive light rail infrastructure is waiting for us starting at the Expo Center; again, no intelligent thought was given to our transportation needs. Local Republicans and one Democrat were largely responsible for this boondoggle. This irresponsible bunch is still holding office.

Now the taxpayers are paying $17 million to open a new office to work on a delayed new bridge. They are getting their act together just in time so taxpayers don’t have to pay back the federal government for the last go round. I started commuting to Portland at age 19. I’m now 70. I’ve spent hours and hours and hours trying to get to work on time and trying to get home in time for dinner. This has been a massive failure of government and I really don’t see a new bridge by the time I hit 80. Disgusted.
