Letter: Herrera Beutler misses big picture

In “Cheers for Herrera Beutler” (Our Readers’ Views, The Columbian, Aug. 20), Mr. Brown praises the representative for a bill to end robocalls. Rep. Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, introduces and supports legislation that is good, but that doesn’t address major problems that affect our world today.

We all hate robocalls. But compare this minor annoyance to the problems of election security. She voted no on a bill to support states in strengthening their election systems. Compare robocalls with the tragedy of a family losing its health care coverage. Yet she has frequently supported repealing the Affordable Care Act. She supports efforts to improve one aspect or another of health care, but not efforts to improve overall health coverage. She did not support legislation to censure the president for his hateful and divisive acts.

The representative supports legislation that makes her look good to a certain segment of her constituency without upsetting her real constituency: the president and big business.
