WSU professor awarded fellowship in France

Sue Peabody, Meyer distinguished professor of history and liberal arts at WSU Vancouver, has been selected as a fellow at the Camargo Foundation for an eight-week residency in Cassis, France. Peabody’s most recent publication, “Madeleine’s Children: Family, Freedom, Secrets, and Lies in France’s Indian Ocean Colonies,” will be the subject of a museum exhibit at the Musee historique de Villele on Reunion Island, near Madagascar. The exhibit opening will coincide with the release of the French translation of Madeleine’s Children in early December.

Peabody is a past president of the French Colonial Historical Society and serves on the editorial board of French Colonial History. She teaches early-modern European society and culture, European colonialism, the Atlantic history of slavery, abolition and emancipation, and European women’s history.
