Letter: Be kind to animals

By Harold A. Lay, Vancouver
Published: December 3, 2019, 6:00am

Reading the “Backyard Bird Hunt” article made me a little sad and unhappy (The Columbian, Nov. 28). Bringing in an animal just to then turn around and release it so it can be shot seems unreasonable and cruel. Why not bring in some zebras or sun bears too?

It’s also a little sad and disappointing that humans, who are supposedly intellectually superior to dogs, are still using shock collars to control their animals. There have been hunting dogs much longer than there have been shock collars, so maybe if your training skills are such that it takes one of those, you might rethink your skills as a trainer.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
