Letter: Long is right for Congress

By Jon Cole, Ridgefield

This is in response to the letter “Long Is Wrong for Congress” by Tabitha Beattie (Nov. 21, The Columbian):

Carolyn Long lost by a 5 percent margin. But two years earlier, Jim Moeller lost by about 23 percent. That’s quite a gap closure and hardly counts as “unelectable.”

“No policies and no ambition for reform”: Making our government function for working-class people is why Carolyn joined the race. Visit electlong.com if you want to know more about Carolyn’s positions.

She’s absent? Carolyn Long held dozens of town halls last year and would love to meet every person in the 3rd District. Heck, I ran into her at Winco in Hazel Dell, and we had a nice talk. As far as her “moving here to run,” she’s been a part of Southwest Washington for over 20 years as faculty at WSU Vancouver. She decided to run because we need actual representation around here!

The fact her husband sells pharmaceuticals is irrelevant. The vast majority of Carolyn Long’s financial support comes from people like me. The most recent FEC campaign finance report shows almost $597,000 received from individuals, and only $37,500 from political action committees. Compare that with Herrera Beutler to see who the real “bought and paid for” candidate is.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
