What alternative universe does Ron Brandon inhabit when, in his recent letter to the editor (“Trump earns evangelical support,” Our Readers’ Views, Dec. 2), he compared Donald Trump to a biblical king? Apparently we should take this Old Testament 2 Kings passage to mean that Trump is anointed by God to “make America great again.” Sounds like justification for a dictator who knows what is best for everyone.
And which mythical America is considered “great” in this MAGA slogan? Is it pre-Civil War America where slaves were happily working on plantations? This was justified by scripture, too, according to many supposedly god-fearing Christians of the time. Or maybe it was the robber baron era of the late 19th century when children worked in sweatshops to support free market capitalism. Or when women didn’t have the vote.
How is it that people who profess Christian values can blindly support someone like Trump, who is so utterly lacking in them? How can they ignore his adultery (sin), constant lies (sin), bribery, obstruction of justice, and lack of human compassion, to name just a few?
If we really want to make America great again, let’s elect leaders who are decent, honest human beings. This one just isn’t.
