Morning Press: Murder charge in teen’s death; offices evacuated; Tommy O’s closing

Man, 25, faces murder allegation in death of transgender Vancouver teen

Detectives say a 25-year-old man accused in the slaying of a Vancouver teenager strangled her to death after learning she was transgender.

David Y. Bogdanov of Vancouver appeared Wednesday morning in Clark County Superior Court on suspicion of second-degree murder in the death of Nikki Kuhnhausen, 17, who disappeared June 5. Kuhnhausen, whose legal first name was Nikolas, identified as female.

PeaceHealth, Hewlett-Packard offices briefly evacuated

Inaccurate information about a situation at PeaceHealth’s and HP’s offices in east Vancouver led to an evacuation Thursday afternoon.

The Vancouver Police Department responded early in the afternoon to 1115 N.E. 164th Ave. The building was evacuated for roughly 30 minutes before it was determined that employees could safely return, PeaceHealth spokesman Randy Querin said.

Clark County flu positivity nears 40 percent

You might have to quarantine relatives this Christmas, and not for their political remarks.

Clark County and the state of Washington are pretty sick. According to Clark County Public Health’s weekly influenza report, the county recorded 38.4 percent flu positivity for Dec. 8 through Dec. 14. The previous week’s positivity was at 32.3 percent.

Tommy O’s, iconic downtown Vancouver restaurant, will close Sunday

Longtime downtown Vancouver restaurant Tommy O’s Pacific Rim Bistro will close permanently this weekend. The restaurant opened in 2002 as a successor to the Aloha Cafe, a deli operated by owner Tom Owens from 1994 to 2002.

Owens announced the news in a Facebook post Friday morning, which was also shared on the restaurant’s Facebook page. The restaurant will shut down after the end of the Tom Grant Band performance scheduled for Sunday evening.

Washington closer to per-mile road usage charge

Washington is one step closer to replacing the state gas tax with a new system where drivers are charged on a per-mile basis.

The Washington State Transportation Commission, meeting Tuesday in Olympia, voted to forward 16 recommendations for a road usage charge to the Washington Legislature, Gov. Jay Inslee and the Federal Highway Administration.
