Stevenson Boys: Team builds on strong senior class

The Stevenson Bulldogs are adjusting to basketball without a decorated senior class, which included Isaac Hoidal (18 points per game) and Lincoln Krog.

First-year coach Robert Waymire is learning the difference in the boys’ game compared to the girls, where he assisted the Bulldogs the past four seasons.

“It’s a change for me, for sure,” Waymire said. “We were able to run some 1-3-1 zones that the boys are having a little more difficulty with because the offenses are a little more athletic.”

Waymire is quick to notice and make changes where needed to help a strong senior class return to the postseason. The Bulldogs finished 9-14 last season.

“We have a good group of seniors, a couple with quite a bit of experience,” Waymire said. “They’ve all played together for quite a few years.”

Jonathan Blackledge, a 5-foot-7 senior guard, is the team’s emotional leader and floor general. Bennett Wright, a 5-11 forward, is a vocal leader on the court as well. Jesse Miller, a 6-3 guard, has the ability to take games over.

“We’ve got quite a few shooters,” Waymire said. “I think we’ll be able to spread the floor and hopefully get some open shots.”

The Bulldogs are also hoping to crack into the top three in the highly talented league.

“We at least want to be competitive throughout the season,” Waymire said.
