Letter: Increase transit infrastructure

By Dale C. Chambers, Vancouver

I am a former member of the Washington County Land-use Committee, twice chair of that committee, involved with aircraft owners pilot association, Oregon Pilot Association, Oregon Association Civil Passengers, Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce and Chamber of Commerce land-use committee. In the 1990s, we in citizen public transit groups, businesses and Washington County government brought light rail from Portland to Hillsboro. And light rail is very successful, as well as the growth of The Silicon Forest in Washington County in Oregon.

My opinion is the state of Oregon, state of Washington, and parties involved on the I-5 Bridge: One, replace the bridge. Increase express buses on TriMet and C-Tran. Reduce traffic congestion, increase carpooling. Bike lanes on both the I-5 Bridge and Glenn Jackson Bridge. Light rail from Portland to the fairgrounds, loop to Padden Parkway across the State Route 500 down to Vancouver Mall, en route to the Glenn Jackson Bridge via I-205 to Wilsonville, across to Portland and across the I-5 corridor.

Increase commuter rail on Amtrak between the states.

Increase transit services seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Raise vehicle registration annually in both states. More federal funding to increase mass transit infrastructure nationwide.
