College Notebook: Camas grad Jasinsky gets it done on court, in class

As the leading scorer on the Western Washington men’s basketball team, Trevor Jasinsky can put up some big numbers.

That extends to the classroom as well.

Jasinsky, a junior from Camas High, was named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball All-Academic Team for a second straight year on Tuesday.

A 6-foot-7 forward, Jasinsky is averaging 20.0 points per game this season, which ranks second in the GNAC. That includes a career-high of 33 points on Feb. 7 in a 91-86 win over Central Washington.

In the classroom, Jasinsky maintains a 3.44 grade-point average while pursuing a degree in marketing.

Western Washington is 12-12 overall and 6-8 in the NCAA Division-II GNAC. The Vikings have six more regular-season games before hosting the GNAC tournament beginning March 7.

Men’s Basketball

Robert Franks, a senior from Evergreen, is coming off the best weekend of his career. Monday, the Washington State forward was honored as the Naismith Trophy national player of the week.

Franks led WSU to road wins against Arizona State and Arizona. After tying his career high with 34 points Thursday against ASU, Franks scored 31 points at Arizona for WSU’s first win there in 13 years.

Franks is the first WSU player to win national player of the week honors since Faisal Aden in 2012. He’s also the first Cougar to win Pac-12 player of the week honors since 2015.

Averaging 22.6 points per game, Franks is the Pac-12’s leading scorer and ranks 15th in the nation.

Riley Hawken, a senior from Union, was named to the GNAC all-academic team for the second straight year. Hawken has been the only Western Oregon player to start every game this season, averaging a team-high 12.7 points. He has a 3.52 GPA and is majoring in business.

Jordan Chatman, a senior from Union, has scored in double figures in seven consecutive games for Boston College. He ranks second on the team with 13.9 points per game.

Kienan Walter, a junior from King’s Way, has started the past 10 games for North Dakota. The 6-foot-9 forward is averaging 8.1 points per game with a season high of 18 on Feb. 1 at Western Illinois.

Nasseen Gutierrez-Orozco, a freshman from Columbia River, scored a career-high 19 points in Pacific Lutheran’s 127-118 loss to Pacific on Thursday.

Tyrus Hosley, a junior from Evergreen, scored 17 points in Northwest Christian’s 87-76 loss to Southern Oregon on Friday. At 16.8 points, Hosley is the team’s second-leading scorer.

Women’s Basketball

Jossilyn Blackman, a senior from Battle Ground, posted her sixth double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds) of the season in Lewis-Clark State’s 66-42 win over Rocky Mountain on Thursday. a 6-foot post, Blackman leads the Warriors (No. 17, NAIA) in scoring (13.0) and rebounds (7.8).

Track and Field

Alexis Fuller, a senior from Union, ran a 10-second personal best in the mile at the Husky Classic on Friday in Seattle. The Boise State runner was the top collegiate athlete and fifth overall, clocking 4 minutes, 36.83 seconds, a time that ranks in the top 16 nationally.

Peyton Fredrickson, a senior from Skyview, placed second in the high jump for Washington State at the Husky Classic. He cleared 6-foot-11, a half-inch off his career best.

Emma Jenkins, a freshman from Camas, broke the Washington State indoor freshman record in the 5000 meters, clocking 16:49.99 seconds at the Husky Classic.
