Letter: Heritage Farm benefits community

The Columbian’s article on the 78th Street Heritage Farm (Feb. 7) is informative as far as it goes, but it overlooks a very important aspect for our community. Ten acres on the farm are dedicated to helping provide food security and volunteer opportunities for our citizens.

Last year over 120,000 pounds of healthy, fresh vegetables grown and harvested on the farm were delivered to the Clark County Food Bank, which provided them to 40 food pantries in our community which in turn distributed them to families in need. Over 1,400 volunteers worked 3,500 hours to plant, weed and harvest the produce.

This is a community-wide effort with Churches in Partnership, schools, civic organizations and businesses participating. As residents attend information meetings and complete the county website online survey on the Heritage Farm master plan, I hope they recognize and support this valuable part of the farm. I volunteer at the farm, the food bank and one of the pantries. I see the benefit for the clients, especially the children.
