Letter: Focus on skill, not gender

By Gail Durance, Vancouver

I have noticed articles lately speaking about women lawmakers and women governors. I thought we voted for lawmakers and governors; I didn’t realize that the gender was so important. The message of society seems to be that gender is not important. Gender should not determine one’s ability, career, advancements or pay at work, and rightly so. Once again I am wondering, what is the significance of highlighting women in political positions? I would think the focus should be on an individual getting a job done well, whatever the gender.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
