Letter: Herrera Beutler makes good sense

I support Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s sensible compromise solution to the federal budget impasse: a border wall accompanied by a safe harbor for innocent, faultless Dreamers.

We need a complete, integrated solution to immigration issues. This compromise would be a constructive first step toward that, one which most of us can support when we remember that almost all of us here today are descended from courageous, forward-looking, beloved ancestors who were not born here.

The longer that this budget impasse persists, the more ordinary Americans will be harmed by other politicians’ failure to find a principled middle ground — government employees are working without pay, putting their families at risk; taxpayers will not receive income tax refunds when they expect and need them; access to national parks is limited and many parks are unsafe and filthy; travelers will suffer long delays at airports; and the list of avoidable adverse consequences goes on and on.

Thank you, Jaime, for showing us the way out.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
