Banfield Pet Hospital has contributed more than $4 million toward helping its veterinarians pay off their student loans, and enabled more than $10 million in educational debt refinancing for its associates, the Vancouver-based company announced Tuesday.

“Our goal with the Veterinary Student Debt Relief Pilot Program — and all of our health and well-being initiatives — is to support our veterinary professionals in doing what they do best: delivering high-quality, compassionate care to pets,” Stephanie Neuvirth, Banfield’s senior vice president of people & organization, said in a statement regarding the one-year-old program.

Studies suggest U.S. student debt has exceeded $1 trillion, while an estimated 4 percent of companies offer student loan repayment programs to employees, the company says in a news release.
