Clark County Public Health has identified 22 confirmed measles cases, and reports Orchards Elementary School as an exposure site

Clark County Public Health confirmed 22 measles cases and three suspected cases in its ongoing outbreak investigation. East Vancouver’s Orchards Elementary School has been listed as a new exposure location for Jan. 14.

Health officials said children ages 1 to 10 account for 17 of the confirmed cases. There are four cases in youths ages 11 to 18, and there was one case in an adult age 19 to 29 years. Of the 22 cases confirmed, 19 patients had not been immunized and immunization status could not be confirmed for three others. One person has been hospitalized.

Clark County declared a public health emergency Friday over the growing measles outbreak following news that a person contagious with measles attended a Jan. 11 Portland Trail Blazers game at the Moda Center. That game was nearly sold out, with 19,393 people attending, according to ESPN.

Evergreen Public Schools, which has four schools on the exposure site list, released a statement late Monday relaying a request from health officials that anyone who had exposure to any of the 22 confirmed measles cases to not attend any school performance or event — including all sports matches, meets and games — unless they have proof of immunization or immunity. This restriction will stay in place at Evergreen High School and Hearthwood and Image elementary schools until Jan. 30, and Orchards Elementary School until Feb. 5.

Automated calls

Starting at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, people who have been identified as possibly exposed to measles will receive an automated call from Public Health that will come from the county call center, 360-397-8021, according to a Public Health press release.

Not everyone who might have been exposed will receive the call. People who aren’t reached at 10:30 a.m. will be contacted a second time at 1 p.m. Those who are called will be asked whether they are showing symptoms of measles.

Measles symptoms begin with a high fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a rash that usually begins at the head and spreads to the rest of the body. A person can spread the virus before they show symptoms. People are contagious with measles for up to four days before and up to four days after the rash appears. After someone is exposed to measles, illness develops in about one to three weeks.

The automated calls are an attempt to gather information more efficiently and identify cases sooner, according to the news release.

Immunization rates

At the 11 schools for which immunization data was available, 678 of 6,958 students were listed as being exempt from receiving their measles, mumps and rubella vaccines during the 2017-2018 school year.

According to the Washington State Department of Health, Battle Ground Public School’s River HomeLink has the highest rate of students who do not have MMR shots. Of the 1,019 students enrolled at the school, 239, or 23.5 percent, are not immunized against the highly contagious virus.

Data was not available for Slavic Christian Academy, a private school located in Orchards.

Clark County Public Health is requiring exclusion of students and staff without documented immunity to measles from only schools identified as possible exposure sites. Students and staff excluded from those identified schools are also excluded from other schools, child care and other congregate settings.

Students and staff at schools where measles exposure did not occur are not impacted by exclusions.

Virulent virus

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 90 percent of unvaccinated people exposed to the measles virus develop the disease. The virus lives in the nose and throat mucus of an infected person, and can survive for up to two hours in an airspace where the infected person coughed or sneezed.

Health officials are urging anyone who has been exposed at an identified location and believes they have symptoms of measles to call their health care provider prior to visiting the medical office to make a plan that avoids exposing others in the waiting room.
