Cardinals, Mavericks open play at Curt Daniels Invitaitonal

The Vancouver Cardinals and Vancouver Mavericks opened play in the Curt Daniels Invitational baseball tournament on Wednesday at Propstra Stadium.

The Cardinals fell to Portland Baseball Club 4-1 in the tournament opener. Josh Mansur (Ridgefield High) had the lone RBI as the Cardinals were held to three hits by four Portland pitchers.

The Mavericks followed with a 6-1 loss to Gunderson Baseball Academy of Clackamas, Ore. Riley McCarthy (Mountain View) drove in Carter Monda (Evergreen) for the only Mavericks run.

Both local American Legion teams are back in action Thursday. The Mavericks face Lakeside Recovery of Bellevue at 1 p.m. at Columbia River High School. The Cardinals take on Narrows Baseball Club of Gig Harbor at noon at Concordia University in Portland.

Round robin play in the 12-team tournament continues through Sunday. The top two teams in each six-team division advance to the championship round on Monday at Propstra.
