Letter: Trump can’t be trusted

The Republican base has seen first-hand why they should not trust Donald Trump: He will turn on them. After inciting his base into chanting, “Send her back,” he promptly hung them out to dry, falsely claiming he tried to stop them. Trump will discard his followers after they have, perhaps unwittingly, helped him become the dictator he strives to be. One example: gun rights. As dictator, Trump would subvert the U.S. Constitution, including the Second Amendment. He would confiscate all guns held by the public. Dictators don’t allow firearms in the hands of the masses.

Trump’s base may believe they would enjoy favored status under his authoritarian rule. No. Dictators do not abide large numbers of “friends.” If the base continues to trust Trump, they’ll be the first under his boot. They will be blind-sided.

In Our Readers’ Views (“Marching to tyranny and fascism,” July 19), Sue Kusch correctly writes that the Republican Party is marching toward tyranny and fascism. For evidence, look at the image of Trump and the “Send her back” chanters. Note the similarity to the Two Minutes Hate under the gaze of Big Brother in the movie “1984.”
