In regard to “Speak out about homeless issue” (Our Readers’ Views, June 3, The Columbian”), the growing homeless problem ultimately impacts all of us, not just the silently suffering. It’s estimated that 20 percent of America’s homeless are children. Study after study has shown that the first few years of a child’s life are essential in their long-term outcomes. The National Academies of Sciences and other sources calculate that child poverty costs the U.S. some $1.1 trillion each year in terms of lost adult productivity, the increased cost of crime, and increased health expenditures.
Research shows that when people have a safe and affordable place to live, many other problems (such as unemployment, ill health and lack of food) are lessened.
