Here are some of the top stories of the weekend:

County has new event for July 4th

Clark County Fourth of July revelers will have more choices this year.

A new free event featuring a fireworks display, live music, food and other amenities will be offered at the Clark County Event Center at the Fairgrounds.

Organizers of the event, dubbed “Clark County 4th at the Fairgrounds,” insist the new event is not intended to compete with other annual Fourth of July events at Fort Vancouver and the Port of Camas-Washougal.

How rents stack up in Vancouver versus Portland

Economic indicator reports arrive regularly in a newsroom.

Unemployment, durable goods, home sales, retail sales, manufacturers’ shipments, construction spending — that sort of thing. A government agency issues most of the reports. They’re worthy of at least a moment or two of mulling on their once-a-month delivery schedule.

One report in recent months has piqued my interest. That would be the Apartment List, which features rental data on rates for one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Heritage students walk out in support of student barred from ceremony

Dozens of Heritage High School students walked out of class Friday in solidarity with a classmate who alleges school administration has turned a blind eye to bullying, harassment and sexual assault on campus.

Charles Chandler, 17, was barred from participating in graduation after he veered off-script in a speech he gave to an assembly on Wednesday.

Teen sentenced for role in fatal shooting in Hazel Dell parking lot

A 17-year-old boy charged in connection with the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old man during a botched drug robbery in a Hazel Dell parking lot in December was sentenced Friday to a range of about 3 1/2 to six years in a juvenile facility.

Terrance J. Busby pleaded guilty in Clark County Juvenile Court to first-degree robbery. He was originally charged with first-degree murder as the getaway driver for two 15-year-old co-defendants, Oriley J. Huynh and Tristan A. Cienfuegos.

Daybreak Youth Services files federal lawsuit against Clark County Sheriff’s Office

Daybreak Youth Services has filed a federal lawsuit against the Clark County Sheriff’s Office to prevent investigators from disclosing and using patient records seized during a search of the treatment facility related to allegations of sexual assaultand other issues.

The complaint for injunctive relief was filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Tacoma and lists Sheriff Chuck Atkins, Undersheriff Mike Cooke, Sgt. Christopher Luque, Detective Adam Beck and Sgt. Brent Waddell. Efforts to reach Atkins and Cooke, as well as Clark County Prosecutor Tony Golik and Chief Civil Deputy Prosecutor Emily Sheldrick were unsuccessful Friday evening.
