Letter: Focus on defeating Trump

By Charles Humble, Vancouver

The articles in last Sunday’s Columbian are strong evidence of America’s wrong-track focus under the delusional leadership of Donald Trump.

The first, “Trump’s rhetoric on tariffs not convincing” (June 2, Bloomberg News) details recent polling that reveals 62 percent of U.S. adults said American consumers will bear more of the cost of duties than producers in China. An equal percentage were “very” or “somewhat” concerned a trade war would hurt their local economy. Elsewhere in the same edition, George Will’s opinion piece articulates “The protectionism is the disease.” Again, more misguided “leadership.”

The second, “Crumbling roads, spotty internet trouble small businesses,” focuses on America’s crumbling infrastructure, Trump’s broken promises and the likelihood that nothing will get done after Trump pitched a tantrum, vowing not to work with Democrats on anything until they stop investigating him. Oversight is Congress’ constitutional duty.

The sum of these stories is again strong evidence of the incredible ineptness and intemperance of a president who is utterly unqualified and unprepared to lead anything, let alone the greatest country in the world. Outside of a strong economy which he inherited from Barack Obama, Trump is making a pig’s breakfast of a country that should be riding high. Defeating him in 2020 should be the most important focus of every citizen.
