1. A grand old flag

Celebrate Flag Day with the The Historic Trust’s free, family-friendly “Ties, Pies and Patriotism” from 5 to 7 p.m. June 14 at the Fort Vancouver National Site’s Bandstand, across from The Grant House, 1101 Officers Row. The ceremony will include a presentation of the colors, the raising of the huge Garrison Flag, the annual Clark County Mayors’ Patriotic tie contest and a new Patriotic Pie competition. Afterward, enjoy patriotic kids’ activities, like learning flag etiquette, singing patriotic songs and mastering marching. Brownie Girl Scouts can earn their Celebrating Community badge by completing the activities. www.thehistorictrust.org

2. Frog jumps and bed races

Woodland Planters Days, happening now through June 16, is this city’s 97th annual town celebration, and it has something for everyone: a carnival, bingo and a book sale on June 14; on June 15, enjoy a fundraising breakfast, a vendors’ market, Native American art display, parade, a barbecue, a cruise-in car show with live music, old-fashioned games like the frog jump and penny scramble, plus the annual bed races; on June 16, enjoy more breakfast, more cars, more carnival, corn on the cob, hot dogs, hamburgers and a talent show. For a complete schedule and locations, see www.planters-days.com.

3. Vintage vroom and artful autos

Temperatures are heating up and hot rods are revving up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 15 during Touchmark’s Annual Car Show at Fairway Village, 2911 S.E. Village Loop, Vancouver. See 100 classic cars and enjoy a barbecue and live music, plus an exhibit of “Car Art” from Mosaic Arts Alliance. Look for Tim Klein’s “Yarn Car,” a 1967 Imperial Crown car covered with five miles of acrylic yarn. This artful automobile has been featured in Reader’s Digest, USA Today, the New York Times, and the New York International Auto Show, as well as on CNN and “Good Morning America.” www.facebook.com/touchmarkvancouvercarshow/

4. It has a certain “Ring” to it

Love Street Playhouse presents “The Talisman Ring,” a swashbuckling romance running from June 14-30 at 126 Loves Ave., Woodland. The play follows the story of spirited young Eustacie, whose betrothal has been arranged by the dying Lord Lavenham to the dull Sir Tristram. To escape her impending life of loveless misery, Eustacie runs away and finds herself in the middle of a smuggling ring masterminded by Ludovic, Lavenham’s disinherited grandson, who has been wrongly accused of murder. Can Eustacie clear his name? Tickets are $20, available at www.lovestreetplayhouse.com or 800-966-8865.

5. Train-ing day

Bring Dad out for a day of “train-ing,” riding the rails with the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad’s 1929 steam locomotive. The Father’s Day Steam Trains chugga-chug south from Yacolt Station, 207 Railroad Ave., about seven miles to the Heisson area, through a 330-foot solid rock tunnel with a stop at Moulton Station to visit Yacolt Falls. Trains depart at noon and 2:30 p.m. on June 15 and 16. Tickets are $22 for adults, $16 for youth ages 3 to 12 and $21 for military or seniors age 60 and better. Kids age 2 and under ride free. For more information and to make reservations, visit tickets.bycx.org or call 360-686-3559.
