WASHOUGAL — Second-graders at Gause Elementary School had the opportunity to see a wide array of insects while also learning some valuable life lessons during a special classroom presentation in May. The presentation, called “The Bug Chicks,” was led by entomologist and award-winning university lecturer Kristie Reddick, who uses insects to teach students about bravery, as well as teach them that “different isn’t bad.” Many students were able to overcome their fears in touching several types of bugs, including a tarantula, water roach and a variety of colorful moths. “That hissing sound from a roach does not mean they are mad and going to pounce,” Reddick said in a news release. “It actually means ‘Please don’t eat me!’ “
