The majority of our “natural” gas comes from fracking. Natural gas is mostly methane, and the global warming potential of unburned methane is 86 times the global warming potential of CO2. Fracked gas is the next big climate fight because it persistently leaks from the fracking fields, from the compressor stations and from the gas lines. Satellite reports showed a jump in atmospheric levels of methane when fracking went mainstream.
President Obama required the frackers to reduce fugitive methane emissions in the well-fields, but President Trump has rescinded that rule. Researchers from Duke University and Boston University recently detected methane leaks in thousands of places in Washington, D.C.
That’s why we need local leaders, and presidential candidates like Gov. Jay Inslee, to oppose fracked gas projects in our state, like the world’s largest fracked gas-to-methanol refinery, proposed in Kalama.
