EUGENE, Ore. — A resident of a Eugene assisted living facility has been arrested after allegedly beating another resident with a metal cup.

Daniel Loyd, 70, who lives at the South Hills Rehabilitation Center on East 28th Avenue, was charged Thursday with first-degree assault, a Measure 11 crime that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 7 1/2 years.

The victim was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

Eugene police were called to the rehab center at 3:35 a.m. Wednesday for a report of an assault with injury. Officers discovered the victim had been struck repeatedly with a blunt object. Court records show that object was a metal cup.

Loyd is expected to appear in court April 11 for a hearing.
