PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office is responding to a helicopter crash on Friday morning.

KIRO-TV reports it happened in the remote West Twin River area, northwest of Lake Crescent.

Emergency dispatchers received a call at 7:40 a.m. Friday about the crash of a UH1 Huey helicopter.

The sheriff’s office says the helicopter, which was conducting forestry operations in the area, was reported to have gone down after a flight crew mechanic received a radio distress call from the pilot.

At 8:52 a.m., a logger located the crash site and confirmed the pilot was dead. No one else was on board.

Authorities say the wreckage is located in a steep, wooded area with significant amounts of snow on the ground.

Deputies, county search and rescue, firefighters and the Washington State Patrol are at the scene.
