In the early 1950s, a Republican senator named Joe McCarthy took over the nation’s spotlight by waving sheets of paper claiming the State Department, the Army, Hollywood and many others were clogged with spies and known communists.
This was a kiss of death for those accused. McCarthy verbally blasted anyone who questioned or criticized his claims, especially Congress and/or the president, both who feared voter disapproval if they spoke up. This went on for several years until a respected journalist named Edward R. Murrow took him on and proceeded to show in great detail on his television news program, “See It Now,” how the lies were made as he exposed the senator for the liar and cheat that he was.
McCarthy then attacked Murrow, but the country had had enough and he was ultimately censured and left Congress in disgrace. We have a similar situation with our current president who, among many other despicable things, is also an accomplished liar and cheat. We can only hope the Mueller investigation will wind up with a similar result and end this political nightmare.
