Letter: School behavior is appalling

By Tracey Castleberry, Vancouver

I am appalled at the apparently socially acceptable behavior of the children involved in the Gaiser riot, and the adults around these children who allow this type of behavior to begin as small children and grow into disrespect and disdain for those in authority, from the school administrators up to and including the police officers who responded to this event.

Unfortunately, I see this behavior daily in Vancouver Public Schools. When is the community going to step up and demand a change in this unacceptable behavior? Society has told all public schools that there are no real consequences to be given to these children. Studies have “enlightened” society and we now believe that diversion and discussion are ways around behavioral problems. We are told this is normal. This type of behavior is not normal!

The reality is that without true consequences, small children grow to be disruptive middle schooler students, troubled high schooler students and finally adults who have limited ability to make a positive contribution to society. Give back to our schools the ability to really help our children grow into prosperous adults. Parents must stand up and demand a better environment for our children in the school system. Our children deserve a classroom that is positive, quiet, structured, and where they can learn free from distraction. Our teachers do, too.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
