Why: Billy Blues Bar and Grill has been operating since 2013 and has become a local favorite where both friends and strangers feel welcome. In addition to the full bar, serving good food and good times has been the mainstay of Billy Blues.

What I tried: To start, my dining companion and I tried the spinach artichoke dip. I ordered the prime rib French dip sandwich with fries, and my dining companion had the top sirloin with mashed potatoes and clam chowder.

The spinach artichoke dip is topped with Parmesan cheese and chopped tomatoes and served with colorful tortilla chips. It was not overly rich and cheesy, and we found it was a good start to our meal without being too filling.

My dining companion enjoyed the chowder and noted there were not any spoonfuls that contained sand in them, which is usually very common with clam chowder.

The French dip was served with au jus for dipping, and I also requested horseradish sauce. There was a generous amount of sandwich-perfect, juicy, lean prime rib between a grill-toasted hoagie roll. I also added grilled onions and Swiss cheese. Whether I added a bit of the sauce or dipped it, the sandwich was most satisfying. I liked the fries that accompanied the sandwich. They were fried to a crisp, golden finish.

My dining companion ordered the top sirloin medium rare and it was prepared just so, much to his delight. Topped with garlic butter, the steak was a home run. The broccoli that came with the steak had a bit of a crunch left to it, which was appetizing. The mashed potatoes were smooth and tasty and completed the trio for a top-notch steak dinner.

Menu highlights beyond what I tried: Bay shrimp cocktail, buttermilk onion rings and wings are among the starters. The soups are house made and vary by the day. Entree salads include a Cobb salad, a taco salad, a cilantro lime chopped chicken salad and a classic Caesar made to accommodate chicken, steak or prawns. Burgers include a bacon mushroom Swiss burger, a bleu cheese burger, Southwest burger, and a cowboy burger made with honey ham, cheddar cheese, BBQ sauce, an onion ring and classic toppings. Sandwiches include a Philly New York sandwich, a chicken sandwich, a halibut sandwich, and a knife and fork crab and bay shrimp sandwich. Seafood dishes include prawn options and baked halibut. Pasta can be ordered with blackened chicken, chicken and mushrooms, sauteed prawns, or broccoli and mushrooms. Steaks include flat iron, New York, filet mignon and rib-eye and may be combined with options that include prawns, caramelized onions, bleu cheese crumbles and crab. Prime rib is served on Fridays and Saturdays starting at 5 p.m.

Atmosphere: A few windows on the street side of the stand-alone establishment are neatly covered with blinds that are adjusted as the sun goes down. Pool tables are on one end and the stage is on the other, with the bar in between. Just beyond the stage an upper deck of seating can accommodate a large number of patrons. Lighting is subdued and provided by can lights in the ceiling and neon bar signs placed along the walls. Across from the bar, a wall bench is paired with tables and chairs. There is seating at the long bar as well.

Other observations: Service was attentive and friendly. Billy Blues has live music every night except for Mondays, plus pool tables and large screen TVs for entertainment. Reservations may be made for private events.

Cost: Starters are $7 to $12. Basic salads cost $4 and $5. Entree salads are $10 to $16, depending on the protein of choice. Soup is available in a cup for $4 and a bowl for $5. Clam chowder is $5 for a cup and $6 for a bowl. Burgers and sandwiches range from $10 to $15. Chicken dishes are $15 and $16. Seafood options are $16 to $25. Pasta entrees are $13 to $18. Steaks start at $18 and top out at $28.
