Letter: Government should trust parents

By Gail Durance, Vancouver
Published: May 19, 2019, 6:00am

This quote from Gov. Jay Inslee: “In Washington state, we believe in our doctors, in our nurses, we believe in our educators, we believe in science and we love our children” (“Gov. Inslee visits Vancouver: Vaccine bill signed into law,” May 11, The Columbian).

What can be taken from this statement is that Inslee believes in many people; just not parents. This could be a cautionary note to any individuals thinking of having children. Parents are useful for producing children but apparently the state can take care of anything else. Public health is a very valid concern and should be to all individuals. It is also a valid concern that individual rights can be legislated away with so much enthusiasm by elected officials.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
