State golf roundup: Bringhurst brothers both in contention at 2A tournament

Defending 3A champ Moody in ninth place

The Bringhurst brothers of Ridgefield are both in contention after the first day at the Class 2A boys golf state tournament in Spokane.

Kellen Bringhurst shot a 4-over-par 74 at Liberty Lake Golf Course. That puts him one stroke behind co-leaders Paul Jacobsen of Sequim and Jordan Medcalf of Lynden.

Cade Bringhurst is in a three-way tie for seventh place after shooting 78.

The two-day tournament continues Wednesday with the field cut in half.

In other state golf tournaments:

4A Boys

Camas sophomore Owen Huntington shot a 1-over 73, putting him in ninth place after the first day at The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course in Spokane.

Huntington, who placed fifth last year, is four strokes behind co-leaders Costas Panay of Eastlake and Nate Plaster of Gonzaga Prep.

4A Girls

Emma Cox of Camas is in ninth place after the first day at Hangman Valley in Spokane. The senior shot 76, six strokes off the pace.

Skyview’s Maddy Starwalt shot 80, putting her in a four-way tie for 15th place.

Ashley Clark of Camas is in 19th place after shooting 81. The Papermakers are in third place in the team competition, seven strokes behind first-place Redmond.

3A Boys

Defending state champion Graham Moody is tied for ninth at Indian Summer Country Club in Lacey.

The Mountain View sophomore shot a 4-over 76. That puts him five shots behind the three-person lead group.

3A Girls

Fort Vancouver’s Kiana Coburn finished day one as the top local golfer at Hawks Prairie in Lacey. She shot 87 to finish in a tie for 29th.

Central Kitsap’s Brittany Kwon shot a 5-under 67 for a four-stroke lead.

2A Girls

Columbia River teammates Naomi Phelps and Karlyn Gomez were the top local finishers after Day One at Meadowwood Golf Course in Spokane.

Phelps shot an 85 for 14th place. Gomez was two shots behind her in 17th.

McKenna Canty of Black Hills and Brooke Gelinas of White River each shot 74 to lead by one stroke.

1A Boys

Sean Ball of Seton Catholic shot a 5-over par 77, putting him in sixth place at Olympia Golf Club. Ball is eight strokes behind leader Elias Malakoff of Seattle Academy.

1A Girls

Riley Philbrook of King’s Way Christian is tied for 17th place after shooting 87 at Tumwater Valley.

Emersyn Walker of Charles Wright Academy leads by two shots after shooting 3-under 69.
