PORTLAND (AP) — Police say a man in crisis who climbed to the top of a construction crane in Southeast Portland has climbed down and been taken into custody.

The Portland Police Bureau says their Special Emergency Reaction Team and Crisis Negotiation Team responded Wednesday afternoon to reports of the man on a crane near Southeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Southeast Ankeny Street.

Police say the man climbed atop the 290-foot crane and that authorities followed him up there using harnesses. Police say they knew the man’s identity and were talking with him.

Onlookers and construction workers watched as he walked along the crane’s horizontal arm.

Just before 6:30 p.m., police said the person had been safely taken into custody.

Police say traffic was affected for at least four blocks in all directions.
