Letter: Remove Lower Columbia dams

By Lucas Tisdale, Vancouver
Published: November 6, 2019, 6:00am

Recently, the Yakama and Lummi Northwest tribes have called for the removal of Bonneville, The Dalles, and John Day dams.

There’s no point in arguing over it any more. The evidence is undeniable: wild salmon runs are almost gone and hatchery programs have been proven ineffective. We’ve already seen remarkable success with the Elwha River dam removals. While we could keep arguing over the pros and cons of dam removal, it would be better to waste no more time and take a step in the right direction. Nobody wants to see our iconic salmon species gone, so early action is in our best interest. Hopefully, the issue of dam removal can avoid politics and all interest groups can join the Washington tribes in doing what is right.

Fish don’t ask for many things, and a concrete wall isn’t one of these. Please recognize the necessity of dam removal on the mighty Columbia, do some research, and spread the word.
