Letter: Science has been censored

By Elizabeth Lee, M.D., Battle Ground

I attended the Battle Ground School Board meetings and here’s what people opposed to sex ed said: That sex ed leads to promiscuity which leads to criminality which leads to insanity. That the curriculum is Satanic. That teaching kids about gay people grooms them to be gay. That if sex ed was taught, they’d vote down every school levy.

Many people who opposed sex ed don’t even live in our town. And they weren’t just opposed to teaching about LGBTQ issues, birth control, or how to prevent sexual assault (though they opposed all that) — they opposed sex ed of any type. Science lost and religious fervor won.

So come on out to Battle Ground, any religious group! Our school board is pliable! Let’s ditch math, astronomy and medicine since they challenge the inherent power of the Almighty. Our motto is “Don’t teach it, and it will go away.” We won’t teach fire prevention (makes kids start fires) or driver’s ed (makes kids drive recklessly).

Science has been censored and our kids done a great disservice.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
