Letter: Extol virtues of capitalism

There are not many of us willing to stick our neck out and show our true colors, but from time to time it becomes necessary. It seems as though every “ism” is taught in school but capitalism. Now the big rage is socialism.

I would like to put forth a suggestion to get the kids of say from grades 8-12 to maybe think about capitalism. Here is how it would be set up: On the big white board in one corner, the teacher would be required to write a conservative’s quote such as Thomas Sowell: “I have never understood why it is ‘greed’ to want to keep the money you have earned but not greed to want to take somebody else’s money.” Winston Churchill: “Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy. … (Its) inherent virtue … is the equal sharing of misery.” Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.”

The teacher would not need to say anything, just write it out on the board. Just maybe the kids would read it, and a question would be raised in their minds.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
