PRC Ridgefield meeting cancelled
The Joint-State Columbia River Policy Review Committee, (PRC), has announced that it will postpone a Nov. 18 public meeting planned in Ridgefield, intending to schedule some additional meetings in early 2020.
The PRC is composed of members of the Washington and Oregon fish and wildlife commissions
According to the commissions, scheduling conflicts were to blame for the cancellation. This will also allow more time for the newest commissioners to get up to speed on the issues concerning the Columbia River reforms.
The PRC is trying to work out differences between the states for jointly managed fisheries, and emphasizes concurrent regulations in Washington and Oregon’s shared waters.
The committee plans to hold the additional meetings early next year, with the goal of presenting the full commissions with possible recommendations regarding commercial fishing in the Columbia, as well as concurrent rules sometime in spring 2020.
Willapa Bay, tributaries close to salmon fishing
The Willapa Bay and its tributaries have been closed to all salmon fishing by emergency decree.
The WDFW, reacting to coho returns that are well below projections, has closed the bay and the rivers that feed it as of Wednesday. The decree states, in part: “These conservation measures are being taken to ensure escapement goals are met. Managers will continue to assess coho returns and re-open if warranted.”
National Take a Hike Day is Sunday
This Sunday, November 17, is National Take a Hike Day. Sometimes called National Hike Day, the event is a chance to celebrate the national system of trails that Americans use to recreate.
Southwest Washington offers excellent opportunities for hiking. From local refuges, to the system of trails in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, and the system of local urban trails, there is something for all.
