The American Society of Civil Engineers released a list of 10 recipient projects for its 2020 OCEA Honor Awards, and the West Vancouver Freight Access project made the cut, according to a press release on Monday.

The award is intended to recognize “exemplary civil engineering projects” that contribute to their communities and showcase innovation and resourcefulness. The winners will be featured at the society’s Outstanding Projects and Leaders Gala on March 13 in Washington, D.C. Other regional honorees include the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement tunnel in Seattle and emergency spillway reconstruction at the Oroville Dam in Oroville, Calif.

The $251 million West Vancouver Freight access project added a new rail segment that passes beneath the north end of the Union Pacific railroad bridge to connect the BNSF railroad line to the Port of Vancouver. The bypass route is intended to ease freight train congestion by allowing trains on the BNSF line to directly enter and exit the port without having to cross the tracks of the Union Pacific mainline.
