Letter: You are the traffic

“You Are the Traffic” graffiti along I-5 advises. I am reminded of Pogo’s quote: “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

The scrawled message makes a good point. If you’re stuck in traffic, you’re also part of the snarl. It’s not just the other guy. On a larger scale, snarls may not be entirely the fault of other people, other political parties, other nations. We all live on this earth. To varying degrees, we use its resources and produce children who will do the same. We drive, buy and throw away. We put pressure on the supply of clean water, and we pollute the air.

Even though no cars clog your metaphorical lane, if you’re on a highway, you are the traffic.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
