Letter: Reach out to congresswoman

By Willie Dickerson, Snohomish

So much to be grateful for and so many in need as we enter this holiday season (“Salvation Army settles in for service” and “Walk & Knock food drive set for Dec. 7,” The Columbian, Nov. 23). Even the newspaper gets busy and challenged in these times while keeping us up to date and our opinions printed; we can be grateful for this as well. And thankful we live in a democracy, where the press is free and citizens are able to elect and advise their representatives. Grateful that there is a bipartisan movement in Congress to increase the power of the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit, both proven ladders out of poverty.

We can encourage this to happen by asking Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, to support this initiative that helps narrow the income gap and gives struggling families a chance to leave poverty. Our calls and letters to her can make all the difference.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
