Letter: Trump doesn’t live up to oath

“End the divide, do the right thing” by Eugene Robinson was squarely on the mark (The Columbian, Nov. 15). Trump must be impeached by the U.S. House, even if not a single Republican votes for it. Republicans can deny and attempt to defend Trump, but respected, credible witnesses who have testified in the current impeachment hearings are very clear that Trump has committed bribery, which the Constitution identifies as an impeachable offense.

I like the way Robinson put it. He describes Trump as being like an arsonist, “caught with a gas can in one hand and matches in the other.” Anyone who ignores this is denying reality, pure and simple. Trump? He doesn’t care, because he believes he’s above the law.

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, apparently thinks nothing of Trump’s failure to live up to his oath of office to defend the Constitution. When the House votes to impeach, she will no doubt vote no. Her constituents should remember that when the 2020 election rolls around. My wife and I certainly will.
