Letter: Keep the quiet in rural areas

By Sherri Irish, Washougal

Do you enjoy living in a quiet, rural setting? Enjoy the peaceful bliss of a summer afternoon relaxing in the yard? Then listen up. Clark County is considering allowing more “events” in rural areas. We are not talking about the occasional birthday party or family reunion. We are talking about allowing people to rent their land out for “events.” A neighbor could start renting his land all summer for weddings, parties, whatever, with traffic, parking, crowds, and amplified music.

Is this going to benefit our way of life? No! Clark County does not have enough staff to properly manage all of the events, so will not be able to quickly respond to every complaint. This is going to pit neighbor against neighbor and lead to lawsuits against neighbors and the county for violating our right to peaceful enjoyment of our home.

Clark County is asking for public input. Please go to their website, clark.wa.gov, to Departments, to Community Development, scroll way down to Rural Events Venue and make a comment. Better yet, attend the public meeting at 6 p.m. Oct. 9 at 1300 Franklin St., Vancouver, sixth floor. If you value a peaceful life in the countryside, you’d better speak now or forever lose the peace.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
