Lake Shore — Symphony Koss, a graduate of the International Baccalaureate Program at Columbia River High School, will study Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan for the academic year through a National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarship, a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. While in Taiwan, Koss will receive formal language instruction, live with a host family and experience the local culture as part of an immersion environment. Koss previously was selected for the sixth annual National Youth Orchestra of United States, spending three weeks in New York training with professional orchestra musicians to play Carnegie Hall and then head off on a 17-day tour of Asia.
