A 49-year-old Vancouver man with a prior attempted kidnapping conviction was arrested Saturday, accused of trying to kidnap a 14-year-old at the Vancouver Mall.

Steven Hayes is being held at the Clark County Jail on suspicion of first-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault and felony harassment.

The teenage victim was not injured.

The incident was reported at 4:54 p.m. Police said Hayes approached and grabbed the teenager at a store in the mall. The teen fought back, and other shoppers chased Hayes and held him until police arrived.

Hayes was previously arrested in July 2015 for attempting to kidnap a 5-year-old girl from a Vancouver Walmart store, according to Columbian archives. He was ordered to spend 42 months in prison after being found guilty that October.

He is likely to make his first court appearance on Monday.
