The Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office received a $224,000 grant for its Project Home Safe campaign, aimed at reducing the frequency and severity of residential fires.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency grant is the fourth FEMA grant the office has been awarded since 2012 for community risk reduction activities, according to a news release.
“Project Home Safe unites zero fire ignition strategies that focus on stopping fire before it happens with reactionary fire safety education, like fire escape planning, free home safety surveys and smoke alarm installation,” Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said.
The project launched in 2015. Deputy fire marshals and volunteers go door to door and show people simple ways to lessen the possibility of a house fire. They reach about 1,700 households annually.
