Letter: Column on parking misses point

By Kenneth Williams, Vancouver
Published: April 10, 2020, 6:00am

Ann Donnelly neglects several salient facts when she argues that Americans deserve the right to park directly in front of the house. Of the 400 parking spots to be eliminated along Columbia Street — making way for protected bike lanes — only a small fraction are actually used. For most people along Columbia, there is ample parking just around the corner or in the alley. This does not mean the elimination of parking will be painless for all. Donnelly is wrong stating a lesson learned from COVID-19 is that family cars are the only useful mode of transportation. Rather it’s that sometimes it’s necessary to give up some personal freedoms and conveniences to save the lives of fellow Americans.
