Letter: Motives are questionable

Does anyone else think it’s odd that just two days after initial reports surfaced regarding public health officials’ concerns that black and brown communities are disproportionately bearing the awful effects of COVID-19, that demonstrators began protesting against stay-at-home orders?

I am convinced it is not a coincidence, especially considering that these protests are comprised almost entirely of white folks, have been organized by conservative groups, and have in each instance taken on the tone of a Trump rally, with people wearing MAGA hats and waving Confederate flags.

Here’s a warning to people who would likely never want to be branded a bigot; for example, Washington Rep. Vicki Kraft, R-Vancouver, who was recently spotted defying social distancing orders at an anti-stay-at-home protest in Olympia: Be careful, your motives might be showing.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
