BREMERTON — A man has died after reportedly being shot by a South Kitsap deputy who received reports the man was dangling his legs off an overpass above a highway in Washington state, authorities said.

Bremerton Police Lt. Aaron Elton said deputies responded to reports Tuesday around 7:30 p.m. at the Bethel-Burley Road overpass above State Route 16, The Kitsap Sun reported.

Dispatchers received a report of a shooting shortly after deputies arrived, Elton said. Deputies provided aid to the man and took him to a hospital where he died.

“At this point the specific details as to what happened just prior to the shooting are unknown,” said Elton.

Elton is part of the Kitsap Critical Incident Response Team, the inter-agency group investigating the incident.

The Bremerton Police Department issued a statement that said investigators believe one deputy fired at the man.

Further information on the man, the deputy and the shooting was not immediately made available.
